Frequently Asked Questions

A customs broker is a licensed individual by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) legally allowed to represent importers when dealing with customs. A customs broker plays an essential role in the importing process by ensuring products are compliant with government rules and regulations. A customs broker can facilitate a formal entry of a product, on behalf of the importer, and arrange for clearance after the necessary duties and taxes are paid to the department of treasury.

Rules and regulations within the United States government change regularly. It is a customs broker’s job to stay up to date and follow these changes. By doing this, they can adapt to government changes as they assist in clearing your products through customs.

While some products may be exempt from import duties, most products entering the U.S. are subject to customs duty and taxes.

Each product clearing customs must obtain a harmonized tariff classification. This classification will assist in identifying the duty and taxes that must be paid.

A customs bond is a contract signed between three parties; the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), a surety, and an importer. This contract ensures that all duty and taxes owed to the U.S. government will be paid by the importer.

Anyone who is importing into the U.S. must sign this contract before their products may clear customs.

The reason the U.S. government requires this is to assure that the importer will pay the duty and taxes owed.

Anytime you are importing goods into the United States, and the shipment is valued higher than $2,500, you must formally clear your products. When shipping cargo by air express, and using couriers such as DHL, FedEx, and UPS, these couriers assist with customs clearance on your behalf; therefore, you don’t need to clear customs on your own.

We recommend, anytime you are importing products with a value higher than $2,500, that you use a customs broker to assist in the clearance. Since customs broker ensure filings are correct, using a customs broker will save importers from endless delay, stiff penalties, and seized cargo.

Generally, when shipping via air express, the courier offers its own customs brokerage services. The benefit of these services is it remains seamless.

Our suggestion to customers when shipping air express is to rely on the courier’s broker.

In most instances, our brokerage fee is determined by the total value of the imported cargo; however, we offer set costs for specific scenarios.
